Man-made noise is blamed for driving whales to their deaths

Scientists say man-made noise equipment, including anti-seal sonar devices used in fish farms, is driving deep-water animals such as whales to shore, where they die. A northern bottlenose whale was washed up dead on a beach in Prestatyn, North Wales, on Saturday morning, the tenth of the species to become trapped or stranded on British shores this year.

Scientists are blaming not just military sonar, but a large range of man-made noises that they fear are driving the normally deep-water animals to shore.
The week before, another of the 10m (33ft) whales became trapped in a small Scottish loch. Rescuers managed to push the distressed animal out of Loch Eil and halfway to safety but on Friday morning the whale was found dead.
“The whales are migrating at this time of year, so we normally do see more of them, but to have so many washing up is a little strange. There’s an enormous amount of man-made noise out at sea off the northwest of Scotland, and we can’t rule out that this is what causing them to come ashore,” said Mark Simmonds, Director of Science for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.
Northern bottlenose whales are acutely sensitive to sound, for like other beaked whales they use sonic pulses for hunting. The noise of oil exploration (which uses loud underwater explosions to help geologists search for undiscovered reserves), wind farm construction and shipping are all possible culprits.
“It seems military activities caused the mass beaching of dolphins we saw in Cornwall last year, but this is different,” said Dr Simmonds. Once close to shore, northern bottlenose whales are easily disoriented, Mr Simmonds believes. Lochs can act as “whale traps”, which confuse the animals into swimming into ever more enclosed waters. This time last year another whale of the same species got trapped in Loch Eil.
“There’s some kind of phenomenon in this loch that is funnelling them in. Once in, it seems that other noises may have prevented the whale from leaving,” said Mr Simmonds.
Fish farms use ’Acoustic Harassment Devices’ in an effort to dissuade seals from looting from their nets. While designed to be used intermittently, it appears that at least some fish farms leave theirs running continually.
“It’s an awful siren sound — very, very loud,” said Dr Patrick Miller of the Sea Mammal Research Unit in St Andrews. “There’s quite a bit of research that says they have more effect on cetaceans than seals. It may very well be that the seal-scarer had a big effect on keeping the animal inside the loch."
"Standing on the shore of a Scottish loch it might seem silent, but stick a microphone in the water and it’s now an incredibly noisy environment,” said Mr Simmonds. “Sound travels 1,000 times faster underwater than it does through air.”
The Loch Eil whale was only persuaded to leave when a nearby fish farm had turned off its seal-scaring device. Volunteers from the Marine Life Rescue Unit then used underwater loudspeakers to play sounds of their own – including a recording of a hunting killer whale — to push the 10-metre whale back out to sea.
“Although we think of these as open ocean animals, for so many to come in there may be something we’re missing,” said Dr. Millar. “Maybe they’re looking for food. We just know so little about the animals it’s difficult to make strong conclusions.”
A study found that 109 northern bottlenose whales had stranded on the coasts of the UK and Ireland between 1800 and 2002. September was the month that saw most incidents, and coincides with their annual migration southwards. Although the number of reported strandings is increasing, Mr Simmonds cautioned that heightened public awareness and concern may mean dead whales are more likely to be reported.

The BBC's amazing U-turn on climate change

I think the BBC wanted to slip this one out quietly, but a Matt Drudge link put paid to that. The climate change correspondent of BBC News has admitted that global warming stopped in 1998 – and he reports that leading scientists believe that the earth’s cooling-off may last for decades.

“Whatever happened to global warming?” is the title of an article by Paul Hudson that represents a clear departure from the BBC’s fanatical espousal of climate change orthodoxy. The climate change campaigners will go nuts, particularly in the run-up to Copenhagen. So, I suspect, will devout believers inside the BBC. Hudson’s story was not placed very prominently by his colleagues – but a link right at the top of Drudge will have delivered at least a million page views, possibly many more.

Hudson’s piece is a U-turn – not because he has joined the ranks of sceptics who reject the theory of man-made global warming, but because at last he has written a story about the well-established fact that the earth’s temperature has not risen since 1998, and reports seriously the theories of climatologists (themselves not sceptics) who believe that we are in for 30 years of cooling caused by the falling temperatures of the oceans.

    According to research conducted by Professor Don Easterbrook from Western Washington University last November, the oceans and global temperatures are correlated.

    The oceans, he says, have a cycle in which they warm and cool cyclically. The most important one is the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO).

    For much of the 1980s and 1990s, it was in a positive cycle, that means warmer than average. And observations have revealed that global temperatures were warm too.

    But in the last few years it has been losing its warmth and has recently started to cool down.

    These cycles in the past have lasted for nearly 30 years.

    So could global temperatures follow? The global cooling from 1945 to 1977 coincided with one of these cold Pacific cycles.

    Professor Easterbrook says: “The PDO cool mode has replaced the warm mode in the Pacific Ocean, virtually assuring us of about 30 years of global cooling.”

Hudson’s piece must have been a nightmare to write: talk about an inconvenient truth. All the caveats are in place, distancing him from hardline sceptics and giving plenty of space to the climate change orthodoxy. But, in fact, his scrupulous approach only makes matters worse for BBC executives who have swung the might of the corporation behind that orthodoxy, often producing what amounts to propaganda.

The BBC now has serious questions to answer. It has used millions of pounds of licence-payers’ money to advance a simplistic point of view that is beginning to fall apart under scrutiny. Did it not foresee that this might happen? And, now that statistics are beginning to point in the other direction, is it prepared to give equal prominence to a debate about climate change that is both respectable and urgent?

What happened to global warming?

This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998. 
 
But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.
And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.
So what on Earth is going on?
Climate change sceptics, who passionately and consistently argue that man's influence on our climate is overstated, say they saw it coming.
They argue that there are natural cycles, over which we have no control, that dictate how warm the planet is. But what is the evidence for this?
During the last few decades of the 20th Century, our planet did warm quickly.

Sceptics argue that the warming we observed was down to the energy from the Sun increasing. After all 98% of the Earth's warmth comes from the Sun.
But research conducted two years ago, and published by the Royal Society, seemed to rule out solar influences.
The scientists' main approach was simple: to look at solar output and cosmic ray intensity over the last 30-40 years, and compare those trends with the graph for global average surface temperature.
And the results were clear. "Warming in the last 20 to 40 years can't have been caused by solar activity," said Dr Piers Forster from Leeds University, a leading contributor to this year's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
But one solar scientist Piers Corbyn from Weatheraction, a company specialising in long range weather forecasting, disagrees.
He claims that solar charged particles impact us far more than is currently accepted, so much so he says that they are almost entirely responsible for what happens to global temperatures.
He is so excited by what he has discovered that he plans to tell the international scientific community at a conference in London at the end of the month.
If proved correct, this could revolutionise the whole subject.

Ocean cycles

What is really interesting at the moment is what is happening to our oceans. They are the Earth's great heat stores.

So what does it all mean? Climate change sceptics argue that this is evidence that they have been right all along.
They say there are so many other natural causes for warming and cooling, that even if man is warming the planet, it is a small part compared with nature.
But those scientists who are equally passionate about man's influence on global warming argue that their science is solid.
The UK Met Office's Hadley Centre, responsible for future climate predictions, says it incorporates solar variation and ocean cycles into its climate models, and that they are nothing new.
In fact, the centre says they are just two of the whole host of known factors that influence global temperatures - all of which are accounted for by its models.
In addition, say Met Office scientists, temperatures have never increased in a straight line, and there will always be periods of slower warming, or even temporary cooling.
What is crucial, they say, is the long-term trend in global temperatures. And that, according to the Met office data, is clearly up.
To confuse the issue even further, last month Mojib Latif, a member of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) says that we may indeed be in a period of cooling worldwide temperatures that could last another 10-20 years.

Professor Latif is based at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University in Germany and is one of the world's top climate modellers.
But he makes it clear that he has not become a sceptic; he believes that this cooling will be temporary, before the overwhelming force of man-made global warming reasserts itself.
So what can we expect in the next few years?
Both sides have very different forecasts. The Met Office says that warming is set to resume quickly and strongly.
It predicts that from 2010 to 2015 at least half the years will be hotter than the current hottest year on record (1998).
Sceptics disagree. They insist it is unlikely that temperatures will reach the dizzy heights of 1998 until 2030 at the earliest. It is possible, they say, that because of ocean and solar cycles a period of global cooling is more likely.
One thing is for sure. It seems the debate about what is causing global warming is far from over. Indeed some would say it is hotting up.

The Pakistani military rebukes US Ambassador Anne W. Patterson and America's Pakistani loyalists and warns Washington that Islamabad alone has the right to decide its national interest in accordance with its priorities and not in accordance with those set in the US capital.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Top generals of the Pakistan Army issued an indirect but strong warning to Washington and the pro-US government in Islamabad to step back from infringing on Pakistani nation's right to decide its national interest and priorities.

"Pakistan is a sovereign state and has all the rights to analyse and respond to the threat in accordance with her own national interests," said an unusually strong statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations [ISPR], on Oct. 7. It came at the tail of a daylong conference of the commanders of the main corps of the Pakistani armed forces, chaired by the Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

Analysts said this was an indirect rebuke to US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson and other US officials who have been pressuring Pakistan to take a number of actions that fall within the sovereign domain of the country. This includes the decision on whether to launch a military action in the tribal belt adjoining Afghanistan; Pakistan's role, if any, in helping US eliminate opponents of its eight-year long occupation of Afghanistan, and whether America's war in that country should become Pakistan's top national security priority superseding the threat from India.

The military also indirectly rebuffed several US loyalists in the Pakistani government, including President Zardari, his foreign minister and his envoy to Washington who have been fierce advocates of the Kerry-Lugar aid bill that stops short of declaring Pakistan a terrorist state and designates the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta as the headquarters of the Afghan Taliban leadership, all without providing any evidence to back this serious allegation. Other conditions contained in the US aid bill virtually give Washington the right to oversee the smallest details in the workings of the Pakistani civilian and military institutions.

Sources suggest that General Kayani told the commander of the US forces in Afghanistan Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who was briefly in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, that US Ambassador Anne Patterson's recent statements, where she indirectly threatened war against Pakistan, were unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the future. Not that Ms. Patterson is taking it lying down. She reportedly met yesterday a local politician from Balochistan whose fugitive family member is leading a separatist terror campaign from a safe haven in US-controlled Afghanistan, where the separatist terror movement receives money and financing from US allies in Kabul and also from Indian intelligence operatives based in Afghanistan. The stance of the Pakistani military on the Kerry-Lugar bill and the US ambassador's statements accurately reflects the feelings among a majority of Pakistanis. This leaves the elected government, with its unusually strong pro-US position, isolated in the country. The elected government, which came to power through a US-brokered deal that whitewashed illegally obtained wealth, is effectively using Washington to confront the Pakistani military and enforce the US agenda for Pakistan and the region. Almost all the major Pakistani politicians – President Zardari, Altaf Hussain of MQM, Asfandyar Wali of ANP, and now Nawaz Sharif of PMLN – are now directly conducting their own foreign policies with Washington. This has made US a direct player in Pakistani politics, a level of meddling unprecedented in the history of Pak-US relations. But despite this, the Pakistani military made it clear in the statement that it believed the Pakistani parliament is the right forum to decide the fate of the US aid bill in accordance with the wishes of the Pakistani people.

The participants were given a comprehensive briefing on the current security situation in the country and the region. COAS in his opening remarks dilated upon various issues related to national security and impending challenges faced by the country. COAS reiterated that Pakistan is a sovereign state and has all the rights to analyse and respond to the threat in accordance with her own national interests. Kerry Lugar bill also came under discussion during the conference. The forum expressed serious concern regarding clauses impacting on National Security. A formal input is being provided to the Government. However, in the considered view of the forum, it is the Parliament, that represents the will of the people of Pakistan, which would deliberate on the issue, enabling the Government to develop a National response. COAS in his concluding remarks reiterated that Pakistan stands committed to global and regional peace, and wishes to live in harmony with her neighbours.

Saudi Bank Governor Denies Talks to Replace Dollar

Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Saudi Arabia hasn’t held talks with China and other countries on dropping the dollar as the currency for pricing oil, Saudi Central Bank Governor Muhammad al-Jasser said, denying a report in the U.K.’s Independent newspaper.

The Independent report is “absolutely incorrect” and there has been “absolutely nothing” of that nature discussed between Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, and other countries, al-Jasser told reporters in Istanbul, where he’s attending an International Monetary Fund summit. The dollar pared losses after his remarks.

The London-based newspaper said today that Gulf oil producers and nations including China, Japan, Russia and Brazil had held secret talks on a nine-year plan to phase out the dollar in oil trade, and move toward pricing the fuel in a basket of currencies plus gold. It cited unidentified Gulf officials and unidentified Chinese bankers.

“I don’t give credence to this story,” said Simon Williams, a Dubai-based economist at HSBC Holdings Plc. “Short- term, it’s highly unlikely that oil will not continue to be priced in dollars.”

The dollar pared losses against the euro following al- Jasser’s comments, trading at $1.4725 as of 9:40 a.m. in London, from $1.4648 in New York yesterday. It weakened to $1.4749 earlier on the Independent story. It was at 89.10 yen, from 89.53 yesterday, after falling to 88.86.

Dollar Dependence

Criticism of the dollar’s role as the world’s main reserve currency has grown in the wake of the global financial crisis. China and Russia in June agreed to expand use of each other’s currencies in trade to reduce dependence on the dollar, and those countries plus Brazil and India -- the so-called BRIC nations -- have discussed buying each other’s bonds and swapping currencies. The dollar fell to a one-year low of $1.4844 per euro on Sept. 23.

Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally, pegs its currency to the U.S. dollar like most other oil-rich Gulf nations, and has resisted calls for a move away from the dollar in oil pricing as the U.S. currency lost value in recent years.

Iran and Venezuela raised the proposal at a meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which pumps about 40 percent of the world’s oil, in November 2007. The weaker dollar adds to costs for OPEC members who use oil revenue to buy goods priced in other currencies.

New Gulf Currency

Saudi Arabia and three other Gulf oil-producers are planning to create a shared currency that may allow them more freedom from U.S. monetary policy. As the region’s economies rebound faster than the U.S. from the global crisis, “the shortcomings of the dollar peg will become increasingly clear,” HSBC’s Williams said.

Other countries cited by the Independent as being involved in the secret plan also denied it.

Japanese Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii said at a news conference in Tokyo today that he “doesn’t know anything about it,” when he was asked about the newspaper report.

Russia’s Finance Ministry isn’t holding talks on replacing the dollar for oil sales, Interfax news agency reported, citing Deputy Finance Minister Dmitry Pankin. Kuwaiti Oil Minister Sheikh Ahmed Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah told reporters today in Kuwait City that Gulf Arab states have no plans to drop the dollar for oil pricing..

The demise of the dollar

In a graphic illustration of the new world order, Arab states have launched secret moves with China, Russia and France to stop using the US currency for oil trading

In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning - along with China, Russia, Japan and France - to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar.
Secret meetings have already been held by finance ministers and central bank governors in Russia, China, Japan and Brazil to work on the scheme, which will mean that oil will no longer be priced in dollars.
The plans, confirmed to The Independent by both Gulf Arab and Chinese banking sources in Hong Kong, may help to explain the sudden rise in gold prices, but it also augurs an extraordinary transition from dollar markets within nine years.
The Americans, who are aware the meetings have taken place - although they have not discovered the details - are sure to fight this international cabal which will include hitherto loyal allies Japan and the Gulf Arabs. Against the background to these currency meetings, Sun Bigan, China's former special envoy to the Middle East, has warned there is a risk of deepening divisions between China and the US over influence and oil in the Middle East. "Bilateral quarrels and clashes are unavoidable," he told the Asia and Africa Review. "We cannot lower vigilance against hostility in the Middle East over energy interests and security."
This sounds like a dangerous prediction of a future economic war between the US and China over Middle East oil - yet again turning the region's conflicts into a battle for great power supremacy. China uses more oil incrementally than the US because its growth is less energy efficient. The transitional currency in the move away from dollars, according to Chinese banking sources, may well be gold. An indication of the huge amounts involved can be gained from the wealth of Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar who together hold an estimated $2.1 trillion in dollar reserves.
The decline of American economic power linked to the current global recession was implicitly acknowledged by the World Bank president Robert Zoellick. "One of the legacies of this crisis may be a recognition of changed economic power relations," he said in Istanbul ahead of meetings this week of the IMF and World Bank. But it is China's extraordinary new financial power - along with past anger among oil-producing and oil-consuming nations at America's power to interfere in the international financial system - which has prompted the latest discussions involving the Gulf states.
Brazil has shown interest in collaborating in non-dollar oil payments, along with India. Indeed, China appears to be the most enthusiastic of all the financial powers involved, not least because of its enormous trade with the Middle East.
China imports 60 per cent of its oil, much of it from the Middle East and Russia. The Chinese have oil production concessions in Iraq - blocked by the US until this year - and since 2008 have held an $8bn agreement with Iran to develop refining capacity and gas resources. China has oil deals in Sudan (where it has substituted for US interests) and has been negotiating for oil concessions with Libya, where all such contracts are joint ventures.
Furthermore, Chinese exports to the region now account for no fewer than 10 per cent of the imports of every country in the Middle East, including a huge range of products from cars to weapon systems, food, clothes, even dolls. In a clear sign of China's growing financial muscle, the president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, yesterday pleaded with Beijing to let the yuan appreciate against a sliding dollar and, by extension, loosen China's reliance on US monetary policy, to help rebalance the world economy and ease upward pressure on the euro.
Ever since the Bretton Woods agreements - the accords after the Second World War which bequeathed the architecture for the modern international financial system - America's trading partners have been left to cope with the impact of Washington's control and, in more recent years, the hegemony of the dollar as the dominant global reserve currency.
The Chinese believe, for example, that the Americans persuaded Britain to stay out of the euro in order to prevent an earlier move away from the dollar. But Chinese banking sources say their discussions have gone too far to be blocked now. "The Russians will eventually bring in the rouble to the basket of currencies," a prominent Hong Kong broker told The Independent. "The Brits are stuck in the middle and will come into the euro. They have no choice because they won't be able to use the US dollar."
Chinese financial sources believe President Barack Obama is too busy fixing the US economy to concentrate on the extraordinary implications of the transition from the dollar in nine years' time. The current deadline for the currency transition is 2018.
The US discussed the trend briefly at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh; the Chinese Central Bank governor and other officials have been worrying aloud about the dollar for years. Their problem is that much of their national wealth is tied up in dollar assets.
"These plans will change the face of international financial transactions," one Chinese banker said. "America and Britain must be very worried. You will know how worried by the thunder of denials this news will generate."
Iran announced late last month that its foreign currency reserves would henceforth be held in euros rather than dollars. Bankers remember, of course, what happened to the last Middle East oil producer to sell its oil in euros rather than dollars. A few months after Saddam Hussein trumpeted his decision, the Americans and British invaded Iraq.

Si vous lisez l’article récemment publié par Krugman - 6000 mots - où il accuse les autres économistes : « comment ont-ils pu se tromper autant ? » (il aurait du titrer « comment ai-je pu me tromper autant »...) en fait, dans tout l’article il ne mentionne jamais la croissance excessive du crédit, ou l’augmentation excessive de l’effet de levier. Pas une seule fois.

Les économistes américains, à la Fed, au Trésor, y compris M. Greenspan, et dans l’université, négligent complètement cette croissance excessive du crédit, à l’exception de gens comme Robert Schiller, John Taylor...

Vous retardez le problème. Le problème que j’ai avec cette reprise [économique] ... si on monétise, le cours des actions peut encore monter jusqu’à des sommets, comme au Zimbabwe ou dans la République de Weimar, mais on ne fait que retarder le problème, jusqu’à ce que la crise ultime survienne. Et cela arrivera un jour.

C’est la difficulté. Nous avons une dette supérieure à 375% du PIB.... nous pouvons aller à 400%, 500%... si on monétise.

A Kafkaesque form of media gagging order is becoming a troublingly frequent weapon in the legal battlefield

The battle against "legalese" – the derogatory name given to incomprehensible legal jargon – has made steady progress since the term was first coined in the early 20th century. Proficiency in Latin is no longer a requirement for law students, and huge swaths of court rules have been rewritten in "plain language".

Yet one uniquely baffling genre of court document continues to grow: a new generation of omnipotent injunctions. Injunctions are a form of court order, usually preventing the recipient from doing something. Imagine you know something important about an individual, "A", which you attempt to publish or communicate to others. You are sued by A in an attempt to keep that information confidential – not altogether an unusual sequence of events.

In the course of the legal proceedings brought by A, you are likely to receive a court order, stating something like "the publication of all information relating to these proceedings is expressly prohibited". If asked by a friend or colleague about the case brought against you by A, you would have to say: "I can't talk about it, I've been injuncted." Frustrating, but not uncommon. A's injunction was probably obtained on the basis that if you were allowed to reveal the information at the heart of the case, it would render the ensuing process pointless.

But then imagine the injunction was more abstract, all-encompassing, and powerful. One that, in addition to prohibiting publication of information, ordered that you "must not use and must not publish or communicate or disclose the information that A has obtained an injunction".

When you had digested the scope of this injunction, you would realise your response to the aforementioned friend or colleague would now be quite different. If they asked you what happened to the case brought against you by A, your response would have to be silence because, first, the injunction prohibits you from disclosing the information you have about A; and second, the injunction prohibits you from disclosing the fact that A has obtained an injunction.

Regrettably, this is not a rare Kafkaesque experiment in civil procedure. It is, in fact, reality in a growing number of cases brought before England and Wales's high court. Of course it is impossible to say just how many of these cases there are. The parties are unable to discuss them, so their existence often passes by unnoticed by a wider audience; and even where the existence of these injunctions does come to the attention of the press, journalists are equally bound by their terms, risking contempt of court should they report them.

There are indications though, that these once rare weapons are becoming a more regular feature of the legal battlefield. Newspapers, though obviously prohibited from reporting the fact of these injunctions, are notified of them nevertheless, with the paradoxical consequence that the claimant's desire for secrecy becomes widely known by everyone in major media outlets. The Guardian, for instance, has been served with at least 12 notices of injunctions that could not be reported so far this year, compared with six in the whole of 2006 and five in 2005.

Lawyers practising in this highly specialised area are alarmed, they say, by the increasing prevalence of these once "highly abnormal" orders. "If the court is dealing with confidential information, it is only right that it isn't put into the public domain as a result of the hearing," one expert in media law told me. "But that is now increasingly being conflated with the idea you need to protect the identity of the claimants."

"The fundamental principle is that all these applications should be dealt with in open court. You can only keep things secret if to do otherwise would render the administration of justice impracticable," he added. "It's hard to see how revealing the identity of the parties falls into that category."

Even in cases where an individual faces the revelation of personal information – think of Lord Browne, chief executive of BP, who applied for an injunction to prevent the fact of his four-year relationship with Jeff Chevalier being published – the principle of open justice emerged victorious. Referring to the parties anonymously is "a course to be avoided unless justice requires it", Mr Justice Eady said in the Browne case, adding that there was no good reason why the parties should not be identified.

More alarming still is the fact that corporations, with motives centred more on their brand and reputation than personal disaster, are invoking these orders, gagging others from saying they have been gagged, let alone whatever they initially wanted to speak out about.

Why are judges agreeing to these orders? Almost unbelievably, in one case a company that had aggressively injuncted its critics then persuaded a judge that, were its behaviour to become publicly known, the company might appear – well – aggressive. The court's response? The mother of all gaggings.

Historic Event or Local Interest News Item?

On October 7, 2001, the UK and US ambassadors to the United Nations formally notified the Security Council that their armed forces had entered Afghanistan in exercise of their right to self defense as a result of the 9/11 attacks that had thrown America into mourning. US ambassador John Negroponte further wrote in his statement his government had obtained “clear, irrefutable” information that Al Qaeda, an organization supported by the Taliban government of Afghanistan, played a key role in the attacks.

On June 29, 2002, Pres. Bush disclosed in his annual State of the Union address that Iraq, Iran and North Korea covertly supported terrorism and that this “Axis of Evil” had entered into a secret pact to destroy the USA. Of course, these three “rogue states” have been keeping lower profiles since Washington crushed the Taliban, but they had not abandoned their common aim.

On February 11 2003, the accusations became more detailed. State Secretary Colin Powell personally told the UN Security how Iraq had supported the perpetrators of 9/11/. After holding up a vial he claimed contained enough anthrax to wipe out an entire continent, he showed a satellite imagery of an Al Qaeda base in northern Iraq that included a chemical weapons facility. He then produced an organization chart to illustrate the terrorist network headed by Abu al Zarkawi in Baghdad. On the strength of this “clear, irrefutable” information, UK and US forces exercised their right to legitimate self-defense in the wake of 9/11 and crossed into Iraq with the support of troops from Australia and Canada.

As ordnance rained down on Baghdad, the 9/11 argument was so useful that the US Congress accused Syria of supporting terrorism on October 15 2003 and authorized Pres. Bush to attack it too if he saw fit. However, Syria was only small change; the real prize was Iran. In July 2004, the president’s 9/11 commission published its final report. At the last minute, two pages were added to describe Iran’s links to Al Qaeda, claiming that Shia government in Tehran had longstanding ties to Sunni terrorists, allowed them to circulate freely on its territory and had provided them facilities in Sudan. A new war now seemed inevitable and this scenario held the international media in suspense for two years.

The only trouble with all that is that, eight years after 9/11, all the “clear irrefutable proof” of Al Qaeda’s responsibility still has not been submitted to the UN Security Council, which has since forgotten about asking for it. In addition, (1) nobody still considers Al Qaeda as a well-structured organization and there is only talk of it as a vague, impalpable “movement” (2) the world’s largest military power still hasn’t captured Mr. Osama bin Laden, (3) the CIA has disbanded the unit that was supposed to find him, (4) the secret pact binding Iran, Iraq and North Korea plays like a broken record and nobody dares mention the term “Axis of Evil” anymore, (5) Ex-State Secretary Powell has publicly admitted that the information he presented to the Security Council was fabricated and (6) the US leadership still keeps asking Iran and Syria to help to manage the mess in Iraq. Nonetheless, the “diplomatically correct” thing for everyone to do is to pretend that everything is as plain as day: a bearded madman holed up in an Afghan cave managed to strike at the heart of the biggest empire in world history and escape its righteous wrath.

Everyone? Um, not quite. First, the leaders of Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, North Korea and Syria did not just deny any hand in the 9/11, they explicitly accused the US military industrial complex of perpetrating the events itself and willfully killing 3,000 of its own people. Secondly, after these denials from those directly accused of involvement in 9/11, the next leaders happy to lampoon the Bush version of 9/11 were Cuba, Venezuela and other countries on poor terms with Washington. Finally, there were national leaders who intended to protect their good relationship with the USA but would not just sit back and buy into a pack of lies: if they remained silent about 9/11 itself, they did state that there was no legal basis for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. These countries were as diverse as Malaysia, Russia, the UAE and now even Japan. Clearly, such a list of skeptics should has nothing to do with being pro- or anti-US, but rather with each country’s definition of national sovereignty and the means at its disposal to assert it.

Journalists are not subject to the same rules of secrecy as diplomats, so we’ll tell you what happened on September 11 2001.

Hollywood Blockbuster Budget with a Lame Screenplay

The official story is that a diabolic Islamic extremist called Osama bin Laden had a grudge against US “infidels” for having sullied the sacred soils of Saudi Arabia by littering it with US military bases so he organized a large-scale terrorist operation with insignificant resources consisting of 19 fanatical commandos, some boxcutters and a few flying lessons.

He lives in a well-appointed cave out of a James Bond film. He infiltrates his people into the USA just like in the Chuck Norris film presciently called “Ground Zero”.

Four sign up at a flight school. They skip the lessons on take-offs and landings and focus all their attention on actual piloting. Operating in four teams on the agreed day, these fanatics hijack airliners by threatening to slit the throats of the cabin crew with boxcutters.

At 08.29, American Airlines receives a radio message that says the caller is a crewmember on American 11 (Boston/Los Angeles) and that the aircraft has been hijacked. Standard operating procedure is to notify the military immediately and scramble fighters for an intercept within less than eight minutes. But when the World Trade Center suffers the first impact 17 minutes later, the fighters were all still on the ground.

At 08.47, United 175 (Boston/Los Angeles too) turns off its transponder. Civilian radar can now only track it as an unidentified blip. This triggers the alert although air traffic control (ATC) still has no way of knowing whether the dead transponder is due to hijacking or equipment malfunction. When the second impact hits the WTC at 09.07, fighters still have not been scrambled to establish a visual contact.

At 08.46, a Boeing 757 strikes the North Tower of the WTC. It hits the exact center of the façade. Given that the wingspan of a B757 is 63 meters and a speed in excess of 700 kph, the error margin for the maneuver is 3/10ths of a second. Few fighter pilots could repeat that feat, yet we are told that a student pilot did it. The same feat happens again at 09.03 when a second B757 slams into the South Tower, but flying upwind this time.

Still at exactly 09.03, a missile crosses the field of a camera belonging to New York One channel. It was fired from an aircraft behind the smoke on a diagonal trajectory towards the ground. This incongruous footage has not been heard of ever since.

The first witnesses say the two aircraft were cargo planes with no windows. Only later were they re-identified as two regular commercial flights, American11 and United175. There is only one video of the impact but six of the second. Zoom views of the fuselage present no sign of windows.

However, zooms do show a dark, unusual fixture on the underside of each craft. Frame by frame viewing shows, for each aircraft, one flash of light emanating from the point of impact just before actual impact. The aircraft do not crash against the façade but plunge straight in and disappear entirely, with the facade and pillars offering no resistance.

At 08.54, American 77 (Washington DC/Los Angeles) changes heading without ATC authorization, its transponder goes dead and it disappears from civilian radar screens.

At 09.25, the Herndon Command Center determines a major emergency has occurred. It forbids all takeoffs nationwide, orders all airborne craft to land immediately and reroutes all transatlantic flights to Canada. Meanwhile, the New York City Port Authority shuts all bridge and tunnel links to Manhattan.

Still at 09.25, Richard Clarke, the US president’s antiterrorism adviser, holds a video conference for the White House, Departments of Defense, Justice and State, plus the CIA and FAA.

From aboard American 77, Fox Anchor Barbara Olson calls her husband on her cellphone. Theodore Olson is now the Attorney General after defending Pres. Bush before the Supreme Court. She tells him her plane has just been hijacked and they exchange emotional farewells. At 09.30, ATC declares AA77 missing. It apparently crashed in a national park in West Virginia before any fighter intercept.

However, also at 09.30, ATC at Dulles Airport in Washington DC picks up an unidentified aircraft with the speed and handling characteristics of a military jet. It penetrates the restricted flying zone around the Pentagon. The Pentagon’s automatic air defense batteries do not respond. After making a turn to avoid a highway cloverleaf, the craft penetrates the wall of the Pentagon building before detonation and kills 125 persons. Witnesses identify the craft as a missile. Surviving wall clocks read 09.31.

Forty minutes later, the damaged walls and floors collapse. The CNN reporter on the scene states there is no sign of any aircraft in view. CNN then shows Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld helping rescuers evacuate an injured victim on a stretcher. He then tells Pentagon staffers he saw the wreckage of a Boeing airliner inside the burning building. The missile now becomes American 77.

Using secret presidential transmission codes, an anonymous caller phones the White House to say it is the next target.

At 09.35, Antiterrorism Adviser Richard Clarke triggers the Continuity of Operations Plan and Pres. Bush interrupts a visit to a Florida grade school to return to Air Force One. Meanwhile, Vice Pres. Richard Cheney goes to the emergency command bunker under the White House. Congressmen and administration officials are instructed to remove to bunkers as well.

At 09.42, ABC airs live footage of flames consuming two floors of the White House annex housing the offices of presidential and vice-presidential staffers. This fire has never been explained and all mention has long ceased. Troops deploy manpads around the White House to thwart any paratroop drop. These moves are consistent with precautions against a military coup.

Reeling back to 09.24, ATC learns United 93 (Newark/San Francisco) has unauthorized persons on the flight deck. Radio contact is lost, the transponder goes off and the flight is flagged as a hijack. At 10.03, the aircraft vanishes from ATC radar. It apparently exploded mid-air over Pennsylvania. The crash site shows a large empty crater and wreckage dispersed across several miles.

In a sidewalk press conference, Mayor Rudy Giuliani states the Twin Towers might collapse and orders their evacuation.

At 09.58, an explosion at the base of the South Tower unleashes a massive cloud of dust. Smaller explosions then run top to bottom along the building, releasing small dust clouds horizontally. The building collapses in 10 seconds and covers Manhattan in dust.

Considered potential targets, United Nations HQ in New York and Federal offices in Washington DC are evacuated.

At 10.28, the North Tower collapses identically.

At 10.54, Israel locks down all diplomatic legations worldwide.

At about 11.00, Mayor Giuliani orders the evacuation of Building 7. This structure suffers no aircraft attacks and the authorities claim no link to the attacks on the North and South towers; indeed Building 7 is not mentioned in the 9/11 Commission’s final report.

At 13.04, the major TV networks air a short message from Pres. Bush in which he states that government continues to function and that the nation will be defended.

At 13.30, a state of emergency is declared in the nation’s capital and the Pentagon puts two carrier battle groups on full alert to interdict any attempt to disembark enemy troops within reach of Washington. The US considers itself in a war situation.

At 16.00, CNN confirms that the US Government has identified Saudi citizen Osama bin Laden as the mastermind of the attacks. Thus there was neither military coup nor third world war.

At 17.21 Building 7 collapses identically to the North and South towers, except that collapse took only 6-1/2 seconds because of its lower height.

At 18.42, Defense Secr. Donald Rumsfeld holds a Pentagon press conference flanked by members of the bipartisan Senate Armed Services Committee to affirm they stand united in the face of this national tragedy.

By nightfall, damage assessment still remains sketchy and reports speak of 40,000 deaths. At 20.30, Pres. Bush addresses the nation to state that the danger has passed and that America will engage its enemies. War is in the air.
Controlled Demolition of the World Trade Center

The day’s traumatizing events happen too quickly for any serious evaluation of their coherence in real time. We shall now review the key inconsistencies. First, why did the two towers and Building 7 collapse?

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) says the burning kerosene contributed much more to the collapse than the impact by two aircraft. They add that flames spread to Building 7, causing it to collapse in the same way.

Alas, experts respond to this theory with skeptical grins because (1) the Twin Towers were built to withstand impact by an airliner, (2) structural steel melts at 1,538°C and kerosene burns at 700°C to 900°C, (3) fires have ravaged numerous skyscrapers worldwide but collapsed none, (4) neither tower toppled but collapsed straight down upon their footprints and above all (5) all three buildings collapsed at freefall speed, i.e. no floor encountered any resistance from the floor beneath it on the way down – each floor disintegrated before it suffered any pressure from the floor above it.

New York City firefighters are adamant: they heard and saw a series of explosions that destroyed the building from top to bottom. There is video footage with sound to support their statements.

Finally, Prof. Niels Harrit at the University of Copenhagen published an article in the peer-reviewed Open Chemical Physics Journal to report finding traces of nanothermite at Ground Zero. Nanothermite is a military explosive.

In short, explosive charges were methodically laid throughout the towers in such a way as to cut the base of the metal columns for subsequent destruction floor by floor from top to bottom. Photos taken immediately after 9/11 show cleanly-sliced metal columns with no evidence of heat deformation.

In violation of standard criminal investigation procedures, samples of the metal columns were not collected for laboratory analysis. Instead, they were rapidly removed by Carmino Agnello’s scrap metal enterprise and exported for sale on the Chinese market. Mr. Agnello allegedly heads the Gambino crime syndicate.

On Building 7, WTC owner/operator Larry Silverstein stated in a TV interview that he had “told them to pull it” after being warned that it might collapse. Mr. Silverstein later retracted that remark but the video recording lives on.

Building 7’s noteworthy tenants, included the New York City Crisis Center and a CIA station second in size only to its headquarters in Langley, Virginia. That station spied on UN delegations and, since the Clinton Administration, on the finances of major corporations in NYC. If indeed it served as the command post for 9/11 attacks, the “pulling” of Building 7 destroyed any material evidence of such a function.

In late July 2001, Mr. Silverstein (who is also Benjamin Netanyahu’s election fund treasurer) would seem to have struck a poor bargain in acquiring the WTC because of all the asbestos it contained, which was already a violation of the building code. He did however have the lucky hunch to insure it against terrorist attack with payout based on the number of attacks rather than actual losses incurred. Thus, he claimed for two attacks, one for each aircraft and cashed in twice for a total of USD 4.5 billion.

However that may be, it would have taken complex math operations to develop a demolition plan and several days of work to install the nanothermite charges throughout Building 7. WTC security would not have failed to detect the installing demolition teams.

Mr. Silverstein had outsourced WTC security to Securacom, headed by Marvin Bush, the US president’s brother.
3,000 Victims

On the evening of September 11, Mayor Giuliani ordered extra equipment and consumables so that NYC morgues could cope with the 40,000 deaths he had estimated. After several updates, the final death toll fortunately fell to just under 2,200 civilians and 400 rescuers. The numbers include no senior executive any major corporation; most were maintenance staff and office workers. How do we explain this miracle?

At about 07.00, Odigo employees received cellphone text messages warning them not to go to their offices across the street from the WTC because of an impending attack on it. Odigo is a small Israeli company with leading edge text messaging technology. Owners are the Netanyahus and Aman, aka Israeli military intelligence.

At about 08.00, Mr. Warren Buffett opened his annual benefit breakfast at Offutt AFB in Nebraska where he is based. Setting one precedent, he invited every top executive with an office in the WTC. Setting a second precedent, he hosted them on a USAF base, not an upscale hotel. Offutt AFB is headquarters to the US Strategic Command, which controls the nuclear deterrent. The guests had arrived the night before and slept on base. Breakfast was interrupted by announcement of an accidental aircraft collision into the North Tower, followed by announcement of the second collision into the other tower. Guests now realized the collisions were deliberate. This was confirmed by 55th wing commander Gen. Gregory Power’s sudden departure to the underground command bunker. US airspace was locked down, grounding all the top corporate executives at Offutt AFB.

After 9/11, Mr. Buffett became the world’s richest individual, with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates as an occasional rival. He campaigned for Barack Obama but declined that president’s offer to become Treasury Secretary.

In the early afternoon of 9/11, Air Force One landed at Offutt AFB and Pres. Bush made a video conference call from the command bunker to the White House and various Federal agencies. He also recorded an initial TV speech there.

Within minutes of the first impact, FEMA emergency teams deployed to the WTC. As luck would have it, they had arrived in NYC on September 10 for a training exercise on September 11 to respond to a simulated biological or chemical attack on the WTC. This prepositioning enabled fast response that saved many lives. FEMA was headed by Joe Allbaugh, Pres. George W. Bush’s election campaign treasurer who would later handle all government tendering in occupied Iraq.
The Pentagon Missile

The fully-automated air defense systems protecting the restricted flying zone around the Pentagon did not react to the craft that penetrated its perimeter. This could only happen if (1) they had been shut down, leaving the building undefended, or (2) the system identified the intruder as a friendly. Every aircraft carries a friend/foe identification unit that enables authorized aircraft to circulate safely inside that zone.

To strike the Pentagon, the intruder had to make a turn to avoid a cloverleaf intersection. It hit the building wing furthest from the defense secretary’s personal office.

Offices inside the killbox had two purposes. Some of the offices were for the US Navy chief of staff but under renovation while others belonged to the Auditor General. Staff in the latter offices were investigating the largest embezzlement of Defense funds in history. This explains why no general/flag officers were killed and why the fraud investigation was dropped after destruction of all documents.

The missile penetrated one reinforced wall and detonated well inside the building. The heat was so intense that firefighters needed asbestos suits to operate. Water was chosen for their purpose because of its high heat absorption properties. They used water, not flame retardants, as would be the case in the presence of burning kerosene, and flatly stated they had seen no evidence of kerosene or aircraft wreckage. Finally, contrary to Def. Secr. Rumsfeld’s claim, no one in a business suit, as he was, could have reached the point of detonation.

The authorities then proceeded to destroy and rebuild the entire damaged wing. The rubble was removed by a firm equipped to vitrify it. Vitrification is expensive and used to stabilize radioactive waste. In all likelihood, the cruise missile was jacketed with depleted uranium in order to enhance its ability to penetrate concrete and Kevlar. It also likely had a shaped charge in order to obtain a very brief explosion of intense heat.

As plainly visible in the first photos taken after impact, the missile entered the building without damaging the façade. It flew at ground level and entered through a delivery vehicle entrance. It damaged neither door cases nor window frames.

The Pentagon grounds are under constant video surveillance. The missile was necessarily picked up by at least 80 CCTV cameras. The authorities have refused to release all but a handful of footage and stills showing the explosion; none shows the aircraft itself.

The Pentagon lawn also escaped unblemished. The explosion totally destroyed two helicopters and numerous cars in the parking lot. There was much metal wreckage but none that can be traced to a Boeing airliner, not even the engines. The authorities made much of a photo showing a metal fragment about 90cm long that presented traces of a dedicated aeronautic paint on one side, plus red, white and blue markings on the other. Actually, this fragment does not match anything on an Boeing sporting an American Airlines paint scheme. It is however of aeronautical origin and probably belonged to one of the two helicopters at the heliport.

In a bid to buttress the official version, the Pentagon’s top physician identified human remains in the Pentagon killbox as belonging to American 77 passengers. Cremation ashes were presented to victims’ families and the urns specified whether they had been identified by DNA or fingerprint analysis.

However, the Pentagon later said the extreme heat had vaporized the entire airliner wreckage, engines included. If so, it is hard to see how human flesh would have survived such vaporization.
Manual Hijacking or Autopilot?

The hijack theory is based on (1) assuming that the aircraft were airliners and (2) release of inflight cellphone calls to people on the ground.

A number of people have reported receiving inflight calls from relatives. The content of these calls was pieced together into a story of flight attendants taken hostage with boxcutters and the passenger mutiny aboard United 93. United 93 became the basis for two full-length feature films. However, FBI agents at the trial of suspected terrorist Zacarias Massaoui testified that cellphone calls to the ground from airliners at altitude were technologically impossible in 2001. After verification, all reports of inflight cellphone calls received on September 11 proved false. Either the people receiving the calls were lying or they had been duped.

The FBI had made no comments about Theodore Olson, Pres. Bush’s personal lawyer during the election campaign, who was later to become attorney general. Mr. Olson too claimed to have received two cellphone calls from Fox Anchor Barbara Olson just before her death on American 77.

The declassified archives of ex-Def. Secr. Robert McNamara suggest another theory. In 1962, the Joint Chiefs of Staff presented Pres. John F. Kennedy with Operation Northwoods, a false flag operation that would justify an invasion of Cuba. The plan was to shoot down an airliner with MiG fighters painted over in Cuban Air Force markings.

The USAF had already acquired the needed jets from a developing country and repainted them to order. An entire cast was recruited to fly out of Miami after making home movies for later distribution to the news media. Once airborne, the airliner was to shut down the transponder so that civilian radar could no longer identify it. At this point it would be replaced inflight by an empty airliner except for a crew that would bail out after turning on the autopilot. The MiGs would then shoot it down over Miami Bay in front of thousands of witnesses on the ground. For enhanced credibility, the JCS wanted to include people posing as Cuban spies to make telephone calls the FBI would intercept.

Applying this template to 9/11, it would explain (1) why the transponders ceased transmitting, (2) release of faked cellphone calls and (3) absence of windows on the aircraft that struck the WTC. The only update is that in 2001, a crew is no longer needed to fly a Boeing 757. It can operate in drone mode. This obtains more operational flexibility.

Domestic flights are very frequent in the USA and airlines regularly overbook. Passengers simply wait for the next free seat. Yet the four allegedly hijacked flights were filled to only 1/3 of seating capacity.

After a detailed study, the Iranian daily Kheyan concluded that all the passenger victims were close relatives of Defense Department employees, defense contractors or connected in some way to the White House, e.g. Barbara Olson.

The possibility of an airliner striking the Pentagon roof (not façade) was examined in the 1990s. The Defense Department even ran a series of such simulations under the direction of Capt. Charles Burlingame (USN). This officer then resigned from active duty and signed on with American Airline. He was captain aboard American 77 when it allegedly hit the Pentagon.
No Hijacking Means No Hijackers

It took the Justice Department three days to process the passenger cellphone call information, establish the modus operandi of the hijackers, identify them and piece together their biographies. The call from a flight attendant on American 11 said there were five hijackers and that their leader had been assigned Seat 8D, marking him as Mohammed Atta.

However, we now know the cellphone calls were all faked and the actual airliners replaced inlfight with drones. Even more inconveniently, the passenger lists released by the airlines shortly after the 9/11 attacks show that none of the 19 alleged hijackers had ever boarded.

Nonetheless, there is one piece of evidence that Mr. Atta was aboard the airliner that struck the North Tower. A few days after 9/11, a police officer found Mr. Atta’s passport in perfect condition among the smoking debris of the WTC. Everything had been destroyed except this godsend of absolute proof.

The Bush Administration followed up this unconvincing discovery with CCTV footage showing Mr. Atta and his friend Mr. al Omari embarking. Although the footage was indeed shot on September 11th, it was unfortunately shot at Portland Airport where they were making a connection and not at Boston Airport, from where American 11 took off.

Never short of ideas, Rupert Murdoch’s Sunday Times published in 2006 a US Defense Department video dated to 2000 that showed Mr. Atta at one of Osama bin Laden’s training camps in Afghanistan.

Scrutiny of the official list of kamikaze hijackers has more surprises. Some turned out to be alive, e.g. Walid al Asheri, who was supposed to be a member of Atta’s skyjack team – he actually works as a commercial pilot by Royal Air Maroc. He lives in Casablanca and started giving press conferences until the king asked him to keep a lower profile.

That said, 13 of the 19 alleged hijackers were mercenaries who had taken part in various terrorist operations organized by Prince Bandar bin Sultan on behalf of the CIA in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzogovina and/or Russia. They are Khalid Almihdhar; Salem and Nawaf Alhazmi; Ahmed Alhaznawi; Ahmed and Hamza Alghamdi; Mohand, Wail and Waleed Alshehri; Ahmed Alnami; Fayez Ahmed Banihammad and Majed Moqed. They fought as readily for the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate as for Ichkeria, the hoped-for Chechen state.

Prince Bandar became Saudi ambassador to Washington in 1982, as soon as King Fahd took over from his predecessor who was killed by a drug-addicted prince armed by the CIA. He remained ambassador until King Fahd’s final days in 2005. George Bush Sr. considered him as his adopted son and throughout the Arab world, he is known as “Bandar Bush”. Exploiting the many privileges at his disposal, Bandar ran a slush fund for the CIA for over 20 years that was funded by kickbacks on arms sales such as the al Yamamah deal that compromised several prominent British political leaders. He also hired Islamic fundamentalists for covert operations anywhere from Morocco o Xinjiang, China.

Meanwhile, the Bush Administration preferred to keep the spotlight on Osama bin Laden and duck questions about the 19 alleged hijackers. The Saudi golden boy’s brother was Salem bin Laden, a business associate of Pres. Bush at Harken Energy Corporation, a small oil and gas producer. US National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski had hired him in Beirut in the late 1970s, at which time he joined the World Anti-Communist League (now World League for Freedom and Democracy) and organized funding for the mujahideen fighting the USSR in Afghanistan. His “Arab Legion” would later serve in Bosnia-Herzegovina and other combat zones. In a move to set him up as a front for Prince Bandar’s doings, the CIA changed his image from that of a jetset socialite into one of a religious fanatic. Indeed, no self-respecting Islamic radical would have anything to do with the corrupt, disreputable King Fahd, but many found it palatable to subscribe to the fundamentalist, anti-Western rhetoric of “Sheik Osama”, who remained a key pawn on the CIA’s Middle East chessboard. One Arab head of state gave me details of his personal visit to bin Laden in 2001 at the American Hospital in Dubai, where he was undergoing major therapy for his kidneys. He added that Osama’s CIA interfaces were present bedside when he arrived.

In 2001, bin Laden was unknown to the US general public except for fans of “Ground Zero” by filmmaker Chuck Norris. Over an eight year period, the Bush Administration released a series of videos and voice tapes of “Sheik Osama” to prop up its anti-terrorism soap opera.

In 2007, the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Switzerland examined the voice and video recordings. Dalle Molle is reputedly the world leader in voice and video identification. They said they were 95% certain that all bin Laden recordings after 2001 were fakes. That includes the confession tape.

CIA Director George Tenet lied when he confirmed the authenticity of the bin Laden voice and video recordings made after late September 2001. Dalle Molle, which is certified to testify at international courts, has established those recordings were all faked.

Do the US Armed Forces Exist?

The data presented so far invalidate the Bush Administration’s version but should not distract attention the oddest fact of all: On September 11th, the “world’s most powerful armed forces” were powerless, if not AWOL.

Standard operating procedure is for fighter jets to establish visual contact with hijacked airliners within a matter of minutes yet not a single fighter ever got anywhere near the hijacked airliners. Asked to explain this, Vice JCS Chairman Gen. Richard Myers (who was filling in for his boss away on business in Europe on September 11th) became flustered in front of congressional investigators. Gen. Myers told the Congressmen he did not remember what he did that day and kept contradicting himself throughout the hearing.

Yet the US armed forces were indeed on alert that day. They were holding Global Vigilance, their largest annual military exercise. This war game simulates an incoming air attack from Russia across Canadian airspace. It mobilizes the entire USAF and the nation’s entire satellite surveillance capability. The war game is headquartered at Offutt AFB, where Mr. Buffet and his WTC friends happened to be, and where Pres. Bush joined them early that afternoon.

On that day more than any other, the skies were thick with US warplanes, backed by prepositioned satellites linked to command centers tracking every airliner in order to prevent accidental collisions.

Not only were US forces on maximum alert, but so were the general staffs of other major powers in order to monitor and evaluate US performance in the war game. When the 9/11 attack happened, each tried to discover its origin and monitor developments.

In Moscow, Pres. Vladimir Putin tried a hotline call to Pres. Bush to assure him the Russia had nothing to do with it and thereby prevent unwarranted retaliation. However, Pres. Bush refused to take the call, almost as if he found such confirmation pointless. Russian JCS Chairman Gen. Leonid Ivashov ordered investigations of disturbing questions as soon as they arose. His staff concluded that the straight-down collapse of the towers indicated the official story was only intended as a diversion to mask a vast pre-orchestrated set-up. It took him three days to reconstitute the substance of the 9/11 and affirm that the attack resulted from a clash of interests among US leaders. He said the operation was ordered by a faction with the US military industrial complex and carried out by a private security contractor.
Grassroots Wake-Up

Public opinion was dazed and incapable of hard thinking after the blitz of heavyhanded propaganda that included national days of mourning in some countries and a mandatory minute of silence throughout the European Union. Afghanistan soon heard the sound of boots on the ground.

Yet this author was already publishing online articles skeptical of the official story. First written up in French, translations appeared and became the subject of public debate. Six months later, the book 9/11, The Big Lie was published and translated into 28 languages and it triggered a worldwide movement. From there, ex-German Defense Minister Andreas von Bülow added more details, as did ex-CIA Regional Director Oswald Le Winter in Portugal, Political Scientist Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed in the UK and Historian Webster Tarpley in the USA. The movement developed along two tracks.

This author led a worldwide campaign, met with top military officers, statesmen and diplomats and enlisted international organizations. These initiatives have been helping to limit the lethality of Neo-Conservative plans for a “clash of civilizations” by raising awareness about their nature.

Meanwhile, the families of 9/11 victims in the USA stopped condemning our movement, started asking questions and ultimately demanded a new investigation. The Bush Administration intimidated these troublemakers, forcing some like the billionaire Jimmy Walter to go into exile; it then blocked any Congressional inquiries and set up a presidential commission. The commission issued a report that unsurprisingly concluded that that Al Qaeda was guilty and the Bush Administration, innocent. However, it never produced the “clear, irrefutable proof” expected of it. Private individuals created “Loose Change” and other video animations to illustrate the inconsistencies of the official story over the Internet. Professional associations of architects, firefighter, engineers, lawyers, physicians, clerics, academics, artists and political leaders have been set up to find out the truth about the 9/11 attacks. Today tens of thousands of their members have convinced most Americans that Washington lied. They have found a leader in David Ray Griffin, professor of philosophy of religion and theology.

The mainstream media have so far managed to contain the impact of this dissidence. First, it has managed to keep the public in the dark about the worldwide discussion of this issue. Tucked behind a new iron curtain, the mainstream media ignored any public statements by world leaders or foreign governments that questions the official story. It also handled any Western dissidents as leftwing lunatics or, worse still, as rightwing anti-Semitic extremists.

Pres. Obama’s election has not changed this situation. The White House website, which invites citizens to express their concerns, has been flooded with demands for a new 9/11 investigation and the official reply was laconic: “The new Administration wants to “look forward” and not revive the pains of the past.

During his campaign, Obama had his speeches reviewed by Benjamin Rhodes, the young scholar who drafted the final report of the 9/11 Kean-Hamilton commission. Rhodes ensured that no reference would be made to 9/11 or anyone involved in it, lest it open a can of worms. He now works for the White House and sits on the National Security Council. All Obama appointees have been required to retract any prior reservations they may have stated on the record about the official 9/11 story. Van Jones had to resign his appointment precisely because he refused to do that.

However, events of the highest importance may be opening the door to new information about 9/11. King Fahd died in August 2005. His successor, King Abdullah, has been trying to work out the suffocating network of ties between Saudi Arabia and the USA. At first, Prince Bandar was national security adviser but the relationship deteriorated and, in early 2009, Bandar unwisely tried to kill the king so that his father could ascend the throne. Since then, Prince Bandar has not been heard of while 200 members of his family either went to prison or followed him into exile in Morocco. Tongues may soon loosen.

Fait divers ou événement historique ?

Le 7 octobre 2001, les ambassadeurs des États-Unis et du Royaume-Uni informent par courrier le Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies que leurs troupes sont entrées en Afghanistan en vertu de leur droit à la légitime défense après les attentats qui avaient endeuillé l’Amérique, un mois plus tôt. L’ambassadeur John Negroponte précise dans sa missive : « Mon gouvernement a obtenu des informations claires et indiscutables que l’organisation Al-Qaeda, qui est soutenue par le régime taliban en Afghanistan, a joué un rôle central dans les attaques ».

Le 29 juin 2002, le président Bush révèle au cours de son « discours annuel sur l’état de l’Union » que l’Irak, l’Iran et la Corée du Nord soutiennent en sous-main les terroristes car ils ont conclu un pacte secret pour détruire les États-Unis : « l’Axe du Mal ». Certes, ces trois « États voyous » se montrent prudents depuis que Washington a écrasé les taliban, mais ils n’ont pas renoncé à leurs intentions.

Les accusations se font plus précises le 11 février 2003. Ce jour-là, le secrétaire d’État US Colin Powell expose en personne devant le Conseil de sécurité le soutien apporté par l’Irak aux responsables des attentats. Après avoir brandi une fiole sensée contenir un concentré d’anthrax en poudre capable de dévaster un continent entier, il montre une photo satellite de la base installée par al-Qaeda au nord de l’Irak, incluant une usine de fabrication de poisons. Puis, organigramme à l’appui, il détaille le dispositif des terroristes à Bagdad sous le commandement d’Abou Al-Zarkaoui. Sur la base de ces informations « claires et indiscutables », les troupes des États-Unis et du Royaume-Uni, assistées de celles du Canada de l’Australie et de la Nouvelle-Zélande, entrent en Irak, toujours en vertu de leur droit à la légitime défense suite aux attentats du 11-Septembre.

L’argument du 11-Septembre est si commode, que le 15 octobre 2003, alors qu’une pluie de bombes s’abat sur les Bagdadis, le Congrès des États-Unis place à son tour la Syrie en accusation pour son soutien au « terrorisme international » et accorde au président Bush le droit d’entrer en guerre contre elle lorsqu’il le jugera nécessaire. Toutefois, la Syrie n’est destinée qu’à être le « hors d’œuvre » du festin qui s’annonce et dont l’Iran sera le plat principal. En juillet 2004, la Commission présidentielle sur les attentats rend son rapport final. Au dernier moment, elle y ajoute deux pages de révélations sur les liens entre l’Iran et Al-Qaeda. Le régime chiite entretient depuis longtemps des liens avec les terroristes sunnites, les laisse librement circuler sur son territoire et leur a offert des infrastructures au Soudan. Sur cette base, une nouvelle guerre paraît inéluctable. Ce scénario tiendra la presse internationale en haleine durant deux ans.

Seulement voilà : huit ans après les attentats du 11-Septembre, les « preuves claires et indiscutables » de la culpabilité d’Al-Qaeda n’ont toujours pas été transmises par les États-Unis au Conseil de sécurité des Nations-Unies, qui d’ailleurs a oublié de les exiger. Pis, plus personne ne considère Al-Qaeda comme une organisation structurée, mais on en parle désormais comme d’une vague et impalpable « mouvance » ; la plus grande armée du monde n’a toujours pas retrouvé Oussama ben Laden et la CIA a dissous la cellule chargée de sa traque ; le pacte secret entre l’Irak, l’Iran et la Corée du Nord apparaît comme un conte à dormir debout et plus personne n’ose évoquer d’Axe du Mal ; l’ex-secrétaire d’État Colin Powell a admis publiquement que les informations qu’il a présenté au Conseil de sécurité étaient des balivernes ; enfin l’état-major US ne cesse de solliciter l’aide bilatérale de la Syrie et de l’Iran pour gérer le bourbier irakien. Pourtant, le « diplomatiquement correct » exige que tout le monde continue à faire comme si les choses étaient limpides, comme si un illuminé barbu, terré dans une grotte en Afghanistan, avait pu blesser au cœur le plus grand empire de l’Histoire et échapper à sa vengeance.

Tout le monde ? Pas tout à fait. En premier lieu les dirigeants des États concernés, en Afghanistan, Irak, Syrie, Iran et Corée du Nord ne se sont pas contentés de démentir toute responsabilité dans les attentats, ils ont explicitement accusé le complexe militaro-industriel US de les avoir lui-même organisés et d’avoir délibérément assassiné 3 000 de ses concitoyens. En second lieu, les dirigeants d’États en froid avec Washington, comme le Venezuela et Cuba, ne se sont pas gênés pour ridiculiser la version bushienne de ces événements. Enfin, les dirigeants des États qui entendent conserver de bonnes relations avec Washington sans pour autant avaler stoïquement tous ses mensonges ont affirmé que les attaques de l’Afghanistan et de l’Irak n’ont pas de base juridique, tout en s’abstenant de se prononcer sur les attentats eux-mêmes. C’est le cas de pays aussi divers que les Émirats arabes unis, la Malaisie, la Fédération de Russie, et maintenant le Japon. On le voit, la liste des États sceptiques n’a rien à voir avec un clivage pro ou anti-US, mais avec l’idée que chacun se fait de sa souveraineté et des moyens dont il dispose pour l’affirmer.

Le 11 janvier 2008, la Commission des Affaires étrangères et de la Défense de la Chambre haute du Japon refuse d’envoyer de nouvelles troupes en Afghanistan après que le conseiller Yukihisa Fujita ait dénoncé les mensonges US du 11-SEptembre.

Que s’est-il donc passé le 11-Septembre ? Les journalistes n’étant pas astreints à la même réserve que les diplomates, nous allons vous le révéler.

Gros budget hollywoodien, mais scénario bâclé

Selon la version officielle, un islamiste diabolique, Oussama Ben Laden, qui reproche aux « infidèles » états-uniens d’avoir souillé le sol sacré d’Arabie saoudite en y installant des bases militaires, organise une opération terroriste de très grande envergure, avec des moyens matériels insignifiants, mais en recourant à un commando de 19 fanatiques.

Il réside dans une grotte aménagée, digne des films de James Bond. Il infiltre ses kamikazes aux États-Unis, comme dans le film de Chuck Norris à l’intrigue et au titre prémonitoires Ground Zero.
Quatre d’entre eux suivent une formation dans un club d’aviation. Ils négligent les cours sur le décollage et l’atterrissage pour se concentrer exclusivement sur la direction des appareils en vol. Le jour dit, divisés en quatre équipes, les fanatiques détournent des avions de ligne en menaçant d’égorger les hôtesses de l’air avec des cutters à moquette.

A 8h29, American Airlines reçoit un appel radio se présentant comme émanant du personnel de bord du vol 11 (Boston-Los Angeles) informant du détournement par des pirates de l’air. La procédure officielle prévoit la notification immédiate par l’aviation civile à la Défense et le décollage de chasseurs-intercepteurs dans un délai maximal de 8 minutes. Mais lorsque 17 minutes plus tard a lieu le premier impact sur le WTC, les chasseurs n’ont toujours pas décollé.
A 8h47 le transpondeur du vol United Airlines 175 (également Boston-Los Angeles) est coupé. Son identification minéralogique disparaît des écrans radars civils où il n’est plus observable que comme un point. Cette opération donne l’alerte, sans qu’à ce stade l’aviation civile puisse savoir s’il s’agit d’une avarie ou d’un détournement. Pourtant lorsque a lieu le second impact à 9h03, aucun chasseur n’a encore été envoyé pour établir un contact visuel.

À 8h46, un Boeing 757 s’écrase sur la tour nord du WTC. L’avion percute le centre millimétrique de la façade. Sachant qu’elle fait 63 mètres de large et que sa vitesse est supérieure à 700 km/h, la précision de la manœuvre se joue à 3 dixièmes de secondes ; un exploit dont très peu de pilotes de chasse sont capables, mais qui aurait été réalisé par un apprenti-pilote. Le même exploit est réalisé une seconde fois à 9h03 avec un autre Boeing 757 sur la tour sud, qui plus est, dans le sens contraire du vent cette fois.

Au moment exact du second impact, un missile traverse le champ de vision de la caméra de la chaîne New York One. Il est tiré par un aéronef masqué par la fumée de l’impact et se dirige en diagonale vers le sol. On n’entendra plus jamais parler de ces images incongrues.

Les premiers témoins déclarent que les deux aéronefs qui ont percuté les tours sont des avions cargo sans fenêtre, mais les appareils sont plus tard assimilés aux vols réguliers AA11 et UA175. On ne dispose que d’une vidéo du premier impact, mais de six du second impact. Aucun agrandissement ne permet d’observer des hublots.

Par contre, les agrandissements permettent d’observer un objet sombre accroché sous chaque carlingue. La vision image par image des vidéos fait apparaître deux éclairs lumineux provenant des points d’impact juste avant que les appareils ne percutent les gratte-ciel. Les avions ne s’écrasent pas sur les façades, mais ils s’engouffrent à l’intérieur des bâtiments et y disparaissent totalement, les façades et les piliers intérieurs n’exerçant aucune résistance.

À 8h54, le vol American Airlines 77 (Washington DC-Los Angeles) modifie son trajet sans autorisation tandis que son transpondeur cesse d’émettre. Les radars civils perdent sa trace.

À 9h25, conscient d’un événement majeur, le centre de commandement de Herndon interdit le décollage de tout nouvel avion civil sur le territoire des États-Unis et ordonne à tous les avions civils en vol d’atterrir. Les vols transatlantiques sont déroutés vers le Canada. De son côté, le Port de New York ferme tous les ponts et tunnels reliant Manhattan.
Au même moment débute une vidéo-conférence de crise présidée par le conseiller anti-terroriste de la présidence, Richard Clarke. Elle réunit la Maison-Blanche, les département d’État, de la Justice et de la Défense. L’aviation civile et la CIA s’y joignent.

La journaliste vedette de Fox News, Barbara Olson, se trouve à bord du vol AA77. Avec son portable, elle téléphone à son mari, Theodore Olson, qui fut l’avocat de George W. Bush devant la Cour suprême et qui est devenu procureur général des États-Unis. Elle lui raconte comment des pirates de l’air viennent de détourner l’avion et échange d’ultimes mots d’amour avec lui.
À 9h30, l’aviation civile déclare le vol AA77 manquant. Il se serait écrasé dans une réserve naturelle en Virginie occidentale sans jamais rencontrer de chasseurs de l’US Air Force.
Cependant, au même moment, un appareil non identifié, ayant les caractéristiques de vitesse et de maniabilité d’un aéronef militaire, est observé par les radars civils de l’aéroport de Dulles-Washington. L’engin pénètre dans l’espace aérien protégé du Pentagone. Les batteries automatiques de contre-missiles qui protègent le bâtiment ne réagissent pas. Après avoir opéré un virage à angle droit pour contourner un échangeur routier, l’engin pénètre dans le Pentagone, perfore le blindage de six murs d’enceinte et explose, tuant 125 personnes. Les témoins décrivent un missile. Les horloges du bâtiment restent figées, indiquant 9h31.
Un quart d’heure plus tard, la partie endommagée du bâtiment s’effondre. Présent sur le lieu de l’attentat, le correspondant de CNN témoigne qu’il n’y a aucune trace d’avion sur place. Puis CNN montre le secrétaire à la Défense Donald Rumsfeld aidant personnellement les secouristes à évacuer un blessé en portant une civière. Peu après, il indiquera à ses collaborateurs être entré dans le bâtiment en flammes et y avoir vu l’épave d’un Boeing. Le missile sera donc assimilé au vol AA77 manquant.

Le secrétaire à la Défense des États-Unis, Donald Rumsfeld, déserte son poste pour aller porter secours aux victimes (document CNN, M. Rumsfeld est au centre en complet veston, aidant à porter une civière).

La Maison-Blanche reçoit un appel anonyme utilisant les codes de transmission ultra-secrets de la présidence des États-Unis. Le correspondant déclare parler au nom des assaillants. Il indique que la Maison-Blanche sera la prochaine cible.
À 9h35, Richard Clarke active le programme de continuité du gouvernement. Le président Bush, qui était en visite politique dans une école élémentaire de Floride, interrompt son programme et rejoint l’avion présidentiel, Air Force One. De son côté, le vice-président Cheney est emmené dans le bunker anti-atomique de la Maison-Blanche. Tous les parlementaires et ministres sont contactés pour être mis à l’abri dans des bunkers prévus à cet effet.

À 9h42, la chaîne ABC diffuse en direct des images du feu qui ravage deux étages de l’annexe de la Maison-Blanche abritant les bureaux des collaborateurs du président Bush et du vice-président Cheney. Les autorités ne donneront jamais la moindre explication de cet incendie qui a depuis disparu de la mémoire collective. Des équipes armées de lance-roquettes sont déployées autour des bâtiments de la présidence pour prévenir tout débarquement de troupes aéroportées. Tout se passe comme si l’on craint un coup d’État militaire.

À 9h24, l’aviation civile reçoit un message de l’équipage du vol United Airlines 93 (Newark-San Francisco) l’informant d’une intrusion dans le cockpit. La communication étant vite interrompue et le transpondeur cessant d’émettre, le vol est considéré comme détourné. À 10h03, le Boeing disparait des écrans civils. Il aurait explosé en vol ou se serait écrasé en Pennsylvanie. Sur place on relève un grand cratère vide et des débris éparpillés sur plusieurs kilomètres.

Donnant une conférence de presse tout en marchand dans les rues de Manhattan, le maire de New York Rudy Giuliani évoque un possible effondrement des tours jumelles et demande de les évacuer.

À 9h58, une explosion survient à la base de la tour sud du WTC et dégage un immense nuage de poussière. Puis de plus petites explosions détonnent dans le bâtiment de haut en bas, dégageant latéralement de petits nuages de poussière. En dix secondes, le bâtiment s’effondre sur lui-même noyant tout Manhattan sous la poussière.

Les bâtiments des Nations Unies à New York et ceux des ministères à Washington sont évacués. On craint qu’ils soient les prochaines cibles.

À 10h28, la tour nord du WTC s’effondre selon le même schéma.

L’État d’Israël ordonne la fermeture de toutes ses missions diplomatiques dans le monde (10h54).

Vers 11h00, l’ordre d’évacuation d’un autre bâtiment du WTC, la tour n°7, est donné. Ce gratte-ciel n’a pas été touché par les avions et pendant longtemps les autorités ne lient pas son effondrement aux attentats, au point qu’il ne sera pas même évoqué dans le rapport final de la Commission présidentielle.

À 13h04, les chaînes de télévision diffusent un court message enregistré du président Bush. Il garantit à ses concitoyens que la continuité du gouvernement est assurée et que le pays sera défendu.

À 13h30, l’état d’urgence est proclamé à Washington DC, tandis que le Pentagone place deux porte-avions et leurs flottes en état d’alerte maximum pour prévenir un débarquement naval ennemi au large de Washington. Les États-Unis se pensent en situation de guerre.

À 16h00, CNN confirme que les autorités US ont identifié le Saoudien Oussama ben Laden comme étant le commanditaire des attentats. Il ne s’agit donc ni d’un coup d’État, ni de la Troisième Guerre mondiale.

À 17h21, la tour n°7 du WTC s’effondre selon le même schéma que les tours jumelles, mais en 6 secondes et demi car elle est moins haute.

À 18h42, Donald Rumsfeld donne une conférence de presse au Pentagone, encadré par les leaders républicains et démocrates de la Commission sénatoriale de la Défense. Ensemble, ils réaffirment l’unité nationale dans ce moment tragique. Soudain, Rumsfeld prend le sénateur Carl Levin à partie et lui demande si les événements du jour suffisent à le convaincre d’augmenter les dépenses militaires.

Le soir du 11 septembre, les dégâts sont très difficiles à évaluer. On évoque 40 000 morts. À 20h30, le président Bush s’adresse à la nation depuis la Maison-Blanche. Il assure que la menace est écartée et que « l’Amérique » fera front à ses ennemis. Les tambours de la guerre commencent à résonner.

La destruction contrôlée du World Trade Center

Tous ces événements suscitent une forte angoisse et se succèdent trop rapidement pour qu’on puisse à chaud en questionner la cohérence. Nous allons revenir sur les principaux points troubles. Pour commencer : pourquoi les tours jumelles et la tour 7 du WTC se sont-elles effondrées ?

Plus que le choc des avions sur les tours jumelles, c’est la combustion de leur kérosène qui aurait fragilisé les colonnes métalliques des tours jumelles et provoqué leur effondrement, affirment les experts du NIST (Institut national des normes et des techniques). Et c’est la contagion de l’incendie à la tour n°7 qui aurait provoqué ce troisième effondrement, ajoutent-ils.
Or, cette théorie fait sourire les professionnels : les tours jumelles étaient conçues pour résister au choc d’un avion de ligne ; le feu de kérosène n’a atteint une température comprise entre 700 et 900° Celsius, alors que l’acier doit être porté à 1538° pour fondre ; de nombreux gratte-ciel ont été dévastés par des incendies dans le monde, aucun ne s’est jamais effondré ; les trois tours ne sont pas tombées sur le côté, mais exactement à la verticale ; enfin et surtout la vitesse d’effondrement est celle de la chute libre, c’est-à-dire que l’étage supérieur n’a rencontré aucune résistance en tombant sur le sol, chaque étage inférieur s’étant dérobé sous lui avant qu’il ne puisse y exercer de pression.

Les pompiers de New York sont formels : ils ont entendu et vu une série d’explosion détruisant les buildings de haut en bas. Ces témoignages sont corroborés par les vidéos et les bandes sonores.

En définitive, Niels Harrit, professeur de chimie et physique à l’université de Copenhague, a publié dans le très sérieux Open Chemical Physics Journal une étude montrant la présence à Ground Zero de particules d’un explosif militaire, la nanothermite.
Les explosifs ont été placés par des professionnels de telle sorte qu’ils ont d’abord coupé la base des colonnes métalliques, puis qu’ils les ont détruites étage par étage de haut en bas. Sur les photos prises dans les jours suivant, on voit que les colonnes métalliques ont été sectionnées en biais de manière très propre et n’ont aucunement été déformées par la chaleur.

Contrairement à la procédure d’investigation judiciaire, les morceaux des colonnes métalliques n’ont pas été conservés pour expertise. Ils ont rapidement été déblayés par l’entreprise de ferraillage de Carmino Agnello, le parrain du clan mafieux des Gambino, puis revendus sur le marché chinois.

Concernant la tour n°7, le promoteur immobilier locataire du WTC, Larry Silverstein, a indiqué dans une interview télévisée qu’il avait été avisé de sa chute possible et qu’il avait autorisé sa démolition. M. Silverstein s’est rétracté depuis, mais la vidéo de sa déclaration demeure.

La tour n°7 abritait divers services administratifs, dont le PC de crise de la mairie de New York et la principale base de la CIA en dehors du siège de Langley. Cette base, initialement installée pour espionner les missions étrangères à l’ONU, s’était spécialisée sous la présidence Clinton dans l’espionnage économique des grandes sociétés de Manhattan. Dans l’hypothèse où l’opération du 11-Septembre aurait été commandée depuis ce site, sa destruction a définitivement éliminé toute preuve matérielle de la conspiration.

Un mois et demi avant les attentats, Larry Silverstein, trésorier des campagnes électorales de Benjamin Netanyahu, avait fait une mauvaise affaire en louant le WTC alors que les immeubles isolés à l’amiante ne correspondaient plus aux normes légales. Il a par contre eu un pressentiment bénéfique en souscrivant une police d’assurance originale prévoyant une prime en cas d’attentat terroriste, calculée non en fonction du seul préjudice, mais par attaque. Ainsi, considérant qu’il y avait eu deux attaques avec deux avions différents, il a réclamé et finalement obtenu un double dédommagement, soit 4,5 milliards de dollars.

Quoi qu’il en soit, l’installation de la nano-thermite dans les tours jumelles et la tour n°7 suppose des calculs complexes et une pose durant plusieurs jours, donc préalablement au 11 septembre. Cela ne peut être entrepris à l’insu des équipes de gardiennage du WTC.
La sécurité du WTC avait été déléguée par le promoteur Larry Silverstein à la société Securacom, dirigée par Marvin Bush, frère du président.

3 000 victimes

Le soir du 11 septembre, la mairie de New York évoquait un bilan possible de 40 000 morts et commandait en fonction de cette évaluation les matériels nécessaires à ses morgues. À l’issue de très nombreuses révisions, le bilan a heureusement été réduit à moins de 2 200 victimes civiles et 400 victimes parmi les personnels de secours. Parmi les morts, aucun des grands patrons ayant leur bureau dans les prestigieuses tours et, en définitive, bien plus de personnel de maintenance que d’employés de bureau. Comment ce miracle s’explique t-il ?

Vers 7h du matin, les employés de la firme Odigo ont reçu un SMS les avertissant qu’un attentat aurait lieu ce jour au WTC et qu’ils ne devaient donc pas se rendre à leur bureau situé face au WTC. Odigo est une petite société israélienne, leader en matière de messagerie électronique, étroitement liée à la famille Netanyahu et à Aman, le service de renseignement militaire israélien.

Vers 8h, le financier Warren Buffett organisait dans son fief du Nebraska son petit déjeuner annuel de charité. Pour la première fois, il y avait invité systématiquement tous les grands patrons ayant un bureau dans les tours jumelles. Également pour la première fois, il n’avait pas reçu ses invités dans un grand hôtel, mais sur la base militaire aérienne d’Offutt, siège du commandement de la force de dissuasion nucléaire. Les philanthropes étaient arrivés la veille sur place en avion et avaient dormi dans la base. Ils avaient été informés au cours du petit déjeuner qu’un avion avait accidentellement heurté la tour nord du WTC, puis qu’un second appareil avait touché la tour sud. Ils comprirent alors qu’il ne s’agissait pas d’accidents, mais d’attentats, d’autant que le commandant de la base, le général Gregory Power, les quitta immédiatement pour rejoindre son PC de crise. L’espace aérien US ayant été bientôt fermé, les invités ne purent retourner à New York et restèrent dans la base.
Après le 11-Septembre, le financier Warren Buffett est devenu l’homme d’affaire le plus riche du monde en alternance avec son ami Bill Gates. Il a mené campagne pour Barack Obama, mais a refusé de devenir son secrétaire au Trésor.

En début d’après-midi, Air Force One atterrit à son tour sur la base militaire aérienne d’Offutt. Le président Bush rejoignit le PC de crise d’où il participa à la vidéo-conférence avec la Maison-Blanche et les diverses agences concernées. Il y enregistra aussi sa première intervention télévisée.

Dans les minutes qui suivirent le premier impact, les services d’urgence de la FEMA (agence de gestion des situations de catastrophe) se déployèrent sur le site. Par un heureux hasard, ils étaient arrivés la veille à New York et s’apprêtaient à conduire le lendemain au WTC un exercice de simulation d’attaque biologique ou chimique. Tous les services d’urgence furent donc immédiatement actifs, sauvant de nombreuses vies. La FEMA était dirigée par Joe Allbaugh, trésorier de la campagne électorale de George W. Bush et futur responsables des appels d’offre publics en Irak occupé.

Le missile du Pentagone

Les batteries automatiques de contre-missiles du Pentagone n’ont pas réagi à l’entrée d’un aéronef dans l’espace aérien sécurisé. Ceci peut s’expliquer de deux manières : soit elles étaient débranchées laissant le bâtiment sans défense, soit elles ont été inhibées par un code ami. Il existe en effet un code de reconnaissance qui permet aux hélicoptères du ministre et de l’état-major de pénétrer dans la zone sans risque.

Pour contourner un échangeur routier, l’aéronef a fait un virage à angle presque droit, puis il est allé percer le Pentagone dans l’aile la plus éloignée des bureaux du ministre. La zone atteinte était destinée à deux affectations. D’une part des bureaux en cours de réfection pour l’état-major de la Marine et d’autre part des bureaux affectés au contrôleur financier général. Des personnels principalement civils y menaient une enquête sur le détournement de fonds du siècle dans le budget de la Défense. Ceci explique à la fois qu’il n’y ait pas eu d’officier supérieur parmi les victimes et que l’enquête sur les détournements de fonds ait été annulée faute d’archives pour la continuer.

Le missile a percé les murs blindés d’enceinte successifs et a explosé avec une extraordinaire violence dans le bâtiment. La chaleur était si intense que les pompiers ont utilisé des combinaisons amiantées pour s’avancer dans le feu. Ils l’ont combattu avec de l’eau, le fluide qui absorbe la plus forte chaleur massique. Ils n’ont pas eu recours aux retardateurs que l’on utilise pour éteindre les feux de kérosène et ont affirmé ne pas avoir vu quoi que ce soit qui évoque un avion ou du kérosène. Au demeurant et contrairement à son témoignage, une personne habillée en complet veston comme le secrétaire Rumsfeld ne pouvait s’approcher du cœur de l’incendie.

Par la suite, les autorités ont elles-mêmes détruit et reconstruit toute l’aile endommagée. Les gravois ont été déblayés par une entreprise spécialisée qui les a vitrifiés. Cette technique coûteuse est utilisée pour stabiliser des déchets contenant des particules radioactives. Selon toute vraisemblance, le missile était recouvert d’uranium appauvri pour percer le béton et le kevlar ; il contenait une charge creuse pour provoquer une brève explosion à très haute température.

Comme on le voit parfaitement sur les photos prises immédiatement après l’impact, le missile est entré dans le bâtiment sans endommager la façade. Il volait à ras-le-sol et est passé par une porte habituellement utilisée par des voitures de livraison. Il n’a pas abîmé les chambranles.

Les alentours du Pentagone sont surveillés notamment au moyen de caméras. L’aéronef a dû passer dans le champ de vision de plus de 80 d’entre elles. Les autorités ont refusé de rendre ces vidéos publiques et se sont contentées de quelques photos qui montrent l’explosion, mais pas l’aéronef.

La pelouse du Pentagone n’a pas été endommagée non plus. L’explosion a pulvérisé les voitures stationnées sur le parking et deux hélicoptères stationnés sur l’héliport. On a retrouvé quantité de débris métalliques, mais aucun ne correspondant à un Boeing, pas même des réacteurs. Les autorités ont fait grand usage d’une photo officielle montrant un débris d’environ 90 cm de long et portant d’un côté la trace d’une peinture spéciale utilisée en aéronautique et, de l’autre, peinte en rouge, blanc et bleu. Précisément au vu de cette décoration, les amateurs de puzzle constatent qu’elle ne correspond pas à une pièce de Boeing peint aux couleurs d’American Airlines. Il s’agit pourtant bien d’une pièce aéronautique. Elle provient probablement d’un des deux hélicoptères détruits.

Pour créditer la théorie du vol 77, le médecin général du secrétariat à la Défense a authentifié les restes humains des passagers du Boeing dans les décombres du Pentagone. Des urnes funéraires ont été remises aux familles des victimes précisant si ces restes humains ont été identifiés par les empreintes digitales ou par analyse ADN.
Cependant, par la suite, le Pentagone a justifié l’absence de débris du Boeing, y compris des réacteurs, par la chaleur extrême qui aurait gazéifié le métal. On ne voit pas dans ces conditions que des restes humains aient pu être conservés.

Avions détournés ou pilotes automatiques ?

La théorie des avions détournés se fonde sur l’assimilation des aéronefs impliqués à des avions de ligne et sur la divulgation de communications téléphoniques entre les passagers et le sol.

De nombreuses personnes ont témoigné avoir reçu des appels de leurs proches à bord des avions. On a ainsi reconstitué la prise en otage des hôtesses de l’air au moyen de cutters et la mutinerie des passagers à bord du vol UA93. Cette dernière a même donné lieu à deux films par Hollywood. Cependant, en 2006, lors du procès de Zacarias Moussaoui, suspecté d’avoir voulu se joindre aux pirates de l’air, le FBI a attesté que les appels téléphoniques entre des avions à haute altitude et le sol étaient impossibles avec la technologie de 2001. Les vérifications opérées ont montrés que tous ces témoignages sont faux, soit qu’ils aient été inventés, soit que les réceptionnistes aient été abusés.
Le FBI n’a fait aucun commentaire sur le cas de Theodore Olson, avocat de George W. Bush durant l’élection présidentielle, puis procureur général des États-Unis, qui avait témoigné avoir reçu deux appels de son épouse, la journaliste de Fox TV Barbara Olson, disparue avec le vol 77.

Le procureur général des États-Unis, Theodore B. Olson, a menti en assurant avoir reçu deux coups de téléphone de son épouse depuis le vol 77. La journaliste de Fox aurait donné des détails sur la « prise d’otages ». Le FBI a révélé qu’aucune communication n’avait émané du téléphone portable de Barbara Olson.

Une hypothèse explicative peut être avancée en consultant des archives déclassifiées de Robert McNamara. En 1962, l’état-major interarmes des États-Unis proposa au président Kennedy une mise en scène pour justifier une attaque contre Cuba, l’opération Northwoods. Il s’agissait entre autres provocations de faire détruire en vol un avion de ligne états-unien par de faux Mig cubains.
Pour ce faire, l’armée avait récupéré deux Mig soviétiques dans un pays du tiers-monde et les avaient peints aux couleurs cubaines. Des figurants avaient été engagés. Ils devaient prendre un avion à Miami et l’on devait réaliser des films familiaux à cette occasion pour les utiliser ultérieurement dans les journaux télévisés. Une fois en vol, l’avion commercial devait couper son transpondeur pour que les radars civils ne l’identifient pas. Il pouvait alors être substitué à un avion sans passagers. Après que l’équipage ait sauté en parachute, l’avion devait continuer son vol en pilotage automatique puis être abattu par les faux Mig dans la baie de Miami devant des milliers de témoins. Pour crédibiliser l’affaire, l’état-major avait prévu de mettre en scène des conversations téléphoniques entre de faux espions cubains et de les faire intercepter par le FBI.

Appliqué au 11-Septembre, ce modèle permet d’expliquer la coupure des transpondeurs, les faux appels téléphoniques et l’absence de hublots aux avions qui ont percuté le WTC. La nouveauté est qu’en 2001, le Pentagone n’a plus besoin d’équipage pour faire décoller un Boeing 757. Il a la capacité technique de le faire décoller en mode drone. L’opération est plus souple.

Sur les lignes intérieures US où les vols sont très fréquents, les compagnies aériennes vendent plus de billets qu’elles n’ont de places. Les passagers attendent jusqu’à ce qu’on leur trouve une place libre dans un avion. Pourtant les quatre avions prétendument détournés n’étaient remplis qu’au tiers de leur capacité.
L’étude détaillée des listes des passagers réalisée par le quotidien iranien Kheyan montre que tous les disparus sont des familles d’employés du secrétariat à la Défense, de sociétés contractantes du Pentagone ou encore des proches de la Maison-Blanche comme Barbara Olson.

L’hypothèse d’un avion de ligne s’écrasant accidentellement sur le toit du Pentagone (et non pas frappant sa façade) a été étudiée dans les années 90. Le secrétariat à la Défense a même organisé plusieurs simulations sous la direction du commandant Charles Burlingam. Par la suite, cet officier a quitté le service actif et est devenu pilote de ligne chez American Airlines. C’est lui qui était aux commandes du vol 77 censé avoir touché le Pentagone.

Sans avions détournés, pas de pirates de l’air

Dans les trois jours qui suivirent les attentats, le département de la Justice, s’appuyant sur les indications données par les passagers par téléphone, établit le modus operandi des pirates de l’air, les identifia et reconstitua toute leur vie. Ainsi, c’est l’appel téléphonique d’un steward du vol AA11 qui permit de savoir que les pirates étaient au nombre de cinq dans cet avion et que leur chef était le passager du siège 8D, Mohammed Atta.
Mais nous savons aujourd’hui que ces appels téléphoniques sont des faux et que les avions n’ont pas été détournés, mais substitués. Plus désagréable, les listes des passagers fournies par les compagnies d’aviation dans les heures suivant les attentats montrent qu’aucun des 19 présumés pirates n’a embarqué.

Le secrétaire à la Justice, John Ashcroft, a menti en désignant 19 pirates de l’air. Aucun des suspects ne figure sur les listes d’embarquement des compagnies aériennes.

Il existe cependant une « preuve » que Mohammed Atta se trouvait à bord de l’avion qui percuta la tour nord. Quelques jours plus tard, alors que le WTC n’était plus qu’un tas de ruines fumantes, un agent de police y découvrit le passeport intact du pirate. Tout avait été détruit sauf la pièce à conviction providentielle.
Ce rebondissement paraissant peu crédible, l’administration Bush diffusa les images d’une caméra de surveillance d’aéroport montrant Atta et son compagnon al-Omari à l’embarquement. Las ! Ces images ont bien été tournées le 11 septembre 2001, mais à l’aéroport de Portland où les deux hommes auraient transité et non pas à celui de Boston d’où a décollé le vol AA11.
Jamais à court d’idées, le Sunday Times de Rupert Murdoch publia en 2006 une vidéo aimablement fournie par le département US de la Défense, datée de 2000, et montrant Atta en Afghanistan dans un camp d’Oussama ben Laden.

L’examen de la liste officielle des pirates de l’air kamikazes ne lasse pas de surprendre. Certains individus se sont manifestés après les attentats. Par exemple, Walid al-Asheri, qui aurait fait partie de l’équipe d’Atta dans le vol AA11, est un pilote de ligne de Royal Air Maroc. Il vit à Casablanca où il a donné plusieurs conférences de presse jusqu’à ce que le palais royal lui demande de se montrer plus discret.
Cependant 13 des 19 présumés pirates sont des mercenaires ayant participé préalablement à des opérations terroristes organisées par le prince Bandar bin-Sultan pour le compte de la CIA en Afghanistan, en Bosnie-Herzégovine et/ou en Russie. Il s’agit de Khalid Almihdhar, les frères Salem et Nawaf Alhazmi, Ahmed Alhaznawi, Ahmed et Hamza Alghamdi, Wail, Waleed et Mohand Alshehri, Ahmed Alnami, Fayez Ahmed Banihammad, Majed Moqed. Ils ont combattu aussi bien pour l’Émirat islamique des taliban que pour celui d’Itchkérie.
Le prince Bandar fut nommé ambassadeur d’Arabie saoudite à Washington par le roi Fadh dès qu’il monta sur le trône, en 1982, après l’assassinat de son prédécesseur par un prince toxicomane armé par la CIA. Il conserva cette fonction jusqu’à l’agonie du monarque, en 2005. Vite considéré par George Bush père comme un fils adoptif, il est connu dans le monde arabe sous le sobriquet de « Bandar Bush ». Disposant de facilités diverses, il géra durant une vingtaine d’années une sorte de caisse noire de la CIA alimentée par des pots-de-vin versés en marge de contrats d’armement, comme le célèbre contrat al-Yamamah impliquant les plus hautes personnalités britanniques. Il recruta également des mercenaires dans les milieux islamistes pour toutes sortes d’opérations secrètes dans le monde mulsulman, du Maroc au Xinkiang chinois.

Éludant les questions sur les présumés pirates de l’air, l’administration Bush a préféré focaliser les débats sur la personnalité d’Oussama ben Laden. Le célèbre golden boy saoudien était le frère de Salem ben Laden, l’associé à Houston de George W. Bush au sein de la société pétrolière Harken Energy. Il avait été recruté à Beyrouth par le conseiller national de sécurité US Zbigniew Brzezinski à la fin des années 70. Il avait alors intégré la Ligue anticommuniste mondiale et organisé le financement des moujahidin contre les Soviétiques en Afghanistan. Sa « Légion arabe » avait été ultérieurement utilisée sur d’autres théâtres d’opération, notamment en Bosnie-Herzégovine. Après avoir été une personnalité de la jet set, la CIA lui avait forgé une image de religieux fanatique pour servir de paravent aux actions du prince « Bandar Bush ». En effet, si aucun islamiste ne pouvait accepter de servir la monarchie corrompue et honnie de Fadh, beaucoup trouvèrent valorisant le fait de suivre le personnage Oussama ben Laden avec sa rhétorique intégriste et anti-occidentale. « Sheikh Oussama » n’en restait pas moins une pièce majeure de la CIA sur l’échiquier moyen-oriental. Un chef d’État arabe a confié en détail à l’auteur de ces lignes comment il lui avait rendu visite, à l’été 2001, à l’hôpital américain de Dubai, où il subissait un traitement lourd pour ses reins. Selon ce témoin privilégié, ben Laden recevait dans sa chambre en présence de ses collaborateurs de la CIA

En 2001, Oussama ben Laden était un inconnu pour le public US, excepté pour les fans de Chuck Norris qui avaient vu au cinéma son « Ground Zéro ». Pendant 8 ans, l’administration Bush distilla à la presse une série de casettes audio et vidéo du « sheikh » Oussama pour relancer le feuilleton de la guerre au terrorisme.
Dans l’une des cassettes les plus célèbres, il revendique avoir calculé comment deux Boeing pourraient provoquer l’effondrement des tours jumelles et avoir également commandité l’avion contre le Pentagone. Deux exploits que nous savons aujourd’hui imaginaires.
En 2007, l’Institut suisse d’intelligence artificielle Dalle Molle, considéré comme disposant de la meilleur expertise au monde en matière de reconnaissance vidéo et vocale, a étudié l’ensemble des casettes disponibles d’Oussama ben Laden. Il a conclu avec certitude que tous les enregistrements postérieurs à la fin septembre 2001 sont des faux. Ceci inclut la cassette des aveux.

Le directeur central de la CIA, George Tenet, a menti en authentifiant des enregistrements audio et viédo d’Oussama Ben Laden postérieur à fin septembre 2001. L’Institut suisse d’intelligence artificielle Dalle Molle —dont l’expertise est reconnue par les tribunaux internationaux— a établi qu’ils sont tous faux.

Y a-t-il une armée aux USA ?

Cette accumulation d’éléments invalidant la théorie officielle de l’administration Bush ne saurait masquer le plus incongru : durant cette terrible journée, « l’armée la plus puissante du monde » a semblé impuissante, voire absente.

Alors que la procédure d’interception prévoit que les chasseurs doivent établir un contact visuel avec les avions détournés en quelques minutes, pas un seul d’entre eux n’a réussi à approcher un des avions détournés. Sommé de s’expliquer sur cette incurie et de rendre des comptes, le général Richard Myers, chef d’état major adjoint qui assurait la permanence durant le voyage en Europe de son supérieur, s’est mis à bredouiller devant les parlementaires. Il n’a pas été capable de se souvenir de son emploi du temps personnel et n’a cessé de se contredire.

Frappé d’amnésie, le chef d’état-major inter-armes par intérim, le général Richard Meyers, a affirmé aux parlementaires ne pas se souvenir de ce qu’il a fait le 11 septembre.

Pourtant, l’armée était en état d’alerte ce jour-là. Elle avait planifié son plus important exercice annuel : Global vigilance. Il s’agissait d’un jeu de guerre simulant une agression par des bombardiers nucléaires russes passant par le Canada. L’exercice mobilisait toute l’armée de l’air et les moyens de surveillance satellitaire US. Il était dirigé depuis la base d’Offutt où se trouvaient Warren Buffet et ses amis patrons du WTC et où le président Bush se rendit dans l’après-midi.
Ce jour plus que tout autre, les avions de guerre US étaient dans les airs, leurs satellites étaient positionnés et leur état-major observait les avions civils pour éviter les accidents.

L’armée US n’était pas la seule sur le pied de guerre. Les états-majors des grandes puissances étaient eux aussi en alerte, observant et évaluant la démonstration de puissance US. Lorsque le cataclysme s’abattit sur les États-Unis, chacun chercha à en comprendre l’origine et à en suivre les péripéties.

En Russie, le président Vladimir Poutine tenta de joindre d’urgence son homologue US pour lui garantir que Moscou n’était en aucun cas impliqué dans ces crimes et prévenir ainsi une riposte injustifiée. Mais le président Bush refusait de prendre la communication comme si cette confirmation lui paraissait inutile. Le chef d’état-major interarmes russe de l’époque, le général Leonid Ivashov, commanda des études sur chaque point trouble au fur et à mesure qu’il était identifié. C’est l’effondrement vertical rapide des tours jumelles qui convainquit ses experts que le scénario officiel était un leurre cachant une vaste mise en scène. Trois jours après les attentats, il avait reconstitué l’essentiel du drame et pouvait affirmer qu’il s’agissait d’un affrontement interne entre dirigeants US. Selon lui, l’opération avait été commanditée par une faction du complexe militaro-industriel US et réalisée par une société militaire privée.

La révolte de l’esprit

Soumis à une propagande pesante incluant des deuils nationaux dans certains pays et des minutes de silence obligatoire dans l’Union européenne, l’opinion publique occidentale restait hébétée, incapable de réfléchir aux événements. Déjà les bruits de bottes résonnaient en Afghanistan.

Pourtant l’auteur de ces lignes commença à publier une série d’articles sur Internet pour questionner la version officielle. D’abord édités en français, ils furent bientôt traduits en diverses langues et firent débat. Un livre récapitulatif, L’Effroyable imposture, publié six mois plus tard et traduit en 28 langues initia un mouvement de contestation. En Allemagne l’ancien ministre Andreas von Bülow, au Portugal l’ancien directeur régional de la CIA Oswald Le Winter, au Royaume-Uni le politologue Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed, aux États-Unis l’historien Webster Tarpley publiaient de nouveaux éclairages. À partir de quoi la contestation évolua en deux directions simultanées.

L’auteur de ces lignes mena campagne dans le monde entier, rencontrant les plus hauts responsables politiques, diplomatiques et militaires et mobilisant des institutions internationales. Cette action permit d’expliquer le plan néo-conservateur de « choc des civilisations » et d’en limiter l’effet létal.

D’autre part, aux États-Unis, les familles des victimes, après avoir maudit la contestation, commencèrent à se poser des questions et à exiger une enquête. L’administration Bush menaça les trublions, comme le milliardaire Jimmy Walter contraint à l’exil, bloqua toute intervention du Congrès et constitua une Commission présidentielle. Celle-ci rendit un rapport qui conclut sans surprise à l’innocence de l’administration et à la culpabilité d’Al Qaeda, mais ne divulgua pas les « informations claires et indiscutables » tant attendues. Des amateurs réalisèrent des montages vidéo pour visualiser les incohérences de la version officielles et les diffusèrent via Internet, comme le célèbre Loose Change. Des associations professionnelles pour la Vérité sur le 11-Septembre se constituèrent : architectes et ingénieurs, pompiers, juristes, médecins, religieux, universitaires, artistes, politiques. Ils sont aujourd’hui des dizaines de milliers de membres et ont convaincu la majorité de leurs concitoyens que Washington ment. Ils se sont trouvé un leader, le professeur de logique et de théologie David Ray Griffin.

La propagande officielle anglo-saxonne est parvenue jusqu’à présent à limiter les effets de cette contestation. D’abord, elle s’est arrangée pour que le public occidental ignore tout du débat à l’échelle mondiale. Aucune des déclarations de chefs d’État ou de gouvernement étrangers exprimant des doutes n’a été relayée par la presse occidentale, isolée du reste du monde par un nouveau rideau de fer. Ensuite, les contestataires occidentaux ont été soit présentés comme des illuminés, soit assimilés à ce qui fait le plus peur, l’extrême droite antisémite.

L’élection du président Obama n’a pas fait évoluer le débat. Le site internet de la Maison-Blanche, qui invitait les citoyens états-uniens à faire connaître leurs préoccupations, a été assailli d’e-mails demandant l’ouverture d’une enquête judiciaire sur le 11-Septembre. Il y a été répondu laconiquement : la nouvelle administration souhaite se tourner vers le futur et non remuer les douleurs du passé.
Durant sa campagne électorale Barack Obama a fait relire à l’avance tous ses discours par Benjamin Rhodes, un jeune écrivain qui est le rédacteur du rapport de la Commission présidentielle Kean-Hamilton. Il a veillé à ce qu’aucune allusion au 11-Septembre ou à ses protagonistes ne puisse ouvrir la boîte de Pandore. Rhodes est aujourd’hui à la Maison-Blanche et siège au Conseil de sécurité nationale. Tous les membres de l’administration Obama ont été priés d’abjurer les déclarations qu’ils avaient pu faire par le passé exprimant des doutes sur la version officielle. Un conseiller principal, Van Jones, qui a refusé de se dédire a été contraint à la démission.

Cependant, des événements de la plus haute importance rendent possible aujourd’hui une clarification sur les attentats. Le roi Fahd est mort en août 2005. Le roi Abdallah lui a succédé et a progressivement cherché à dénouer les liens étouffants du royaume saoudien avec les États-Unis. Dans un premier temps, le prince Bandar est devenu conseiller national de sécurité, mais ses relations avec le roi se sont détériorées. En définitive, au début de l’été 2009, Bandar aurait imprudemment tenté de liquider le monarque et de placer son père Sultan sur le trône. Depuis, on est sans nouvelles de « Bandar Bush » et de près de 200 membres de son clan, certains seraient exilés avec lui au Maroc, d’autres seraient emprisonnés. Les langues pourraient désormais se délier.
